The actions chosen were those that would affect the whole community as much as possible: abandoning the use of bottled water, valuing tap water, sensory activities around water or reducing the time it takes for automatic taps to run are some examples.

An action plan for the whole school community

Step 3: Create an action plan

After a first project that focused on the theme of waste, the action plan for this second project focused on involving young children as much as possible, raising the awareness of the school community, deepening the measures and actions already in place within the school and sustaining the work previously done on waste. The actions chosen were those that would affect the whole community as much as possible: abandoning the use of bottled water, valuing tap water, sensory activities around water or reducing the time it takes for automatic taps to run are some examples.

Creation of targeted educational tools for toddlers

Step 5 : Links to the curriculum

Many teaching tools were created by the pedagogical team to address the water cycle with the children. The educational explanations were linked to outdoor trips, especially to the lake and displays were created. To make the subject accessible to young children, practical activities and experiments were encouraged. Parents were also involved through the «life notebook», a notebook that the children bring home every day and which allows them to develop and value their learning at home.

Multi-faceted awareness raising

Step 6 : inform and involve

A newsletter is published by the school every two months and gives the opportunity to communicate about the Eco-Schools project in different ways: highlighting the work of the children, recommendations for water-saving purchases, etc. An eco-corner installed at the entrance to the nursery also allows information to be disseminated to the whole community. Finally, an Eco-Schools action day on the theme of water was organised. During this day, all the actors of the project came together to carry out different activities around water. Technical sheets were created for each of them and were shared with the families.

What’s next?

The Pomme d’Happy nursery wants to continue all the actions undertaken so far. And for the next project, the nursery wants to tackle the theme of food!
