Citizenship

The Citizenship theme allows students to examine issues linked to solidarity, civic responsibility and civility and thus to position themselves in relation to their roles, rights and responsibilities in our society.

CITIZENSHIP

Citizenship combines a set of aptitudes, knowledge and attitudes that help to recognise the values we need to live together, make choices and act with respect for ourselves and others. These values include, in particular, solidarity, civic responsibility and civility, all three of which, at different levels (local, global, etc.) allow each of us to play an active role in democratic life by exercising our rights and responsibilities in society and realising which qualities and behaviours are necessary to live alongside each other as effectively as possible.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

Reflecting on how to live together better, share our cultures and defend human rights is a way of changing people’s awareness and shifting their behaviours to create a world that treats individuals, countries and generations more equally.

Yet the need to demonstrate good citizenship is never far away. Group dynamics exist in the classroom and as a result, even very young children learn to listen and be tolerant of others. Participating and taking part in the life of the class, the school and society encourages children to listen to other people and consider their needs, and understand the processes that help them to engage in democracy.
